What is Zakat? Who has to pay it?

Zakat is one of the five mandatory pillars of Islam, and is obligatory upon every affording Muslim who is a sane adult. In order to be eligible to give Zakat, one must posses a certain amount of wealth. This amount is called the "Nisab," and is independent of personal use items such as clothes, car, food, shelter, etc.

One can calculate their "Nisab" amount, and in addition, inventory all their annual assets and liabilities. This net amount left after this calculation is then your "Zakatable" income, for which you must pay Zakat in the amount of 2.5%. There are various online Zakat calculators that can aid in this calculation.
